Main results up to December 2007:
  • Treble of the area included in the ZPE Pico da Vara / Ribeira do Guilherme, actually it is 6067 hectares (April 2005)

  • Elaboration and publication of the Management Plan of the ZPE Pico da Vara / Ribeira do Guilherme, allowing the continuity of the main management and monitoring of the habitat of the Priolo actions until December 2010 (surpassing the period of the LIFE Project), and reinforcing the components of the Legislation of Protection of the Habitat of the Priolo, of Education and of Environmental Sensibilization of the populations and make compatible the economical activities with the protection of the Priolo and its habitat (July 2005)

  • Study of the distribution of the agricultural and forest activities in the area immediately adjacent to the Pico da Vara /Ribeira do Guilherme SPA (December 2004)

  • Study for the Evaluation of the Awareness of the Population in General and the Administration in relation to the problems of the Priolo and the Native Vegetation (1st phase concluded in June 2005)

  • Website of the LIFE Priolo project and online publication of the GIS of the LIFE Priolo project

  • Production of CD-ROM, brochures and school kits devoted to the Priolo and Nature Conservation

  • Protocol with the Regional Department of Public Constructions on the use of native plants on road edges

  • Monitoring Study of the Priolo Population 2002-2007

  • 159 ringed priolos during mist-netting sessions since 2005

  • Monitoring Study of the Abundance and Distribution of rodents and mustelids in native laurel forest areas (started in 2006)

  • Planting of more than 4 hectares of traditional fruit species

  • Annual production of nearby 10.000 plants in the nurseries at the Forest Services of Nordeste

  • Planting of more than 30.000 native plants in the area of action of the LIFE Priolo project

  • Nearly 14 Km of open or recovered trails in all the working area

  • 10 hectares of Japanese Red Cedar Cryptomeria japonica already converted to native laurel forest

  • More that 100 hectares have already been cleared from exotics in the main distribution area of the Priolo through the eradication of exotic species and the plantation of native species

  • Establishment of an interactive Interpretation Centre about the Priolo, the native laurel forest and the menaces both face to their conservation in the SPA – Priolo’s Environmental Centre. This Interpretation Centre is the result of a cooperation between the LIFE Priolo project and the Regional Direction of Forest Resources (DRRF), also with the support from the Regional Secretary of Environment and Sea (SRAM) (December 2007)
